Water flowing from a gutter downspout onto fallen autumn leaves beside a house foundation

Most homeowners think about the gutters along the roofline and forget about the pipes that carry the water down. Downspouts do the last part of the job, moving rain from the gutter to the ground and away from the house. When one clogs, the gutter above it fills up even if it was just cleaned.

November is when this tends to show up. Oaks, sycamores and maples across the Bay Area and Sacramento drop most of their leaves this month, right as the wetter storms start rolling in. A downspout that drained fine in September can be packed solid by Thanksgiving.

How a Downspout Gets Clogged

Debris collects at the bends. Most downspouts have an elbow at the top, where the pipe leaves the gutter, and another at the bottom, where the water turns out toward the yard. Leaves, pine needles and roof grit wash down from the gutter and stop at those turns.

Once a small plug forms, every storm adds to it. Wet leaves mat together tightly, and roofing granules settle in like sand. Bird nests and wasp nests built over the dry months can block a pipe too.

If your downspouts feed into buried drain lines, a blockage underground can back water up into the downspout even when the visible pipe is clear. Mention any underground drains when you request a quote so the technician knows what to look for.

Warning Signs of a Clogged Downspout

Water Spilling Over One Section of Gutter

When a gutter overflows near a downspout but drains normally everywhere else, the downspout is usually the problem.

Little or No Water at the Outlet

Step outside during a steady rain and look at the bottom of each downspout. A working one pushes out a strong stream. A trickle, or nothing at all, means water is backing up somewhere above.

Leaks at the Seams & Elbows

Water forced through a partial clog finds the weak spots. Drips running down the outside of the pipe, or dark streaks on the siding behind it, are a common clue.

Dents, Bulges or a Pipe Pulling Away From the Wall

A downspout full of wet debris is heavy. Over time that weight can loosen the straps holding it to the house or split the pipe at a seam.

Puddles or Washed Out Soil Along the Foundation

When water can’t get down the pipe, it pours off the roof edge instead. Look for muddy trenches in flower beds, dirt splashed up on the walls, or standing water next to the house after a storm.

Why Downspouts Matter Before Winter Storms

Rain in Northern California often arrives in bursts, and a single atmospheric river can drop inches of water in a day or two. A gutter system can only drain as fast as its downspouts allow. If one is blocked during a heavy storm, the gutter it serves fills quickly and spills over.

That overflow lands right where you least want it. Repeated soaking along the foundation can lead to damp crawl spaces, cracked concrete and erosion under walkways and patios. On the coldest nights in the Sacramento foothills, water sitting in a clogged elbow can also freeze and put extra stress on the seams.

What You Can Check Yourself & What to Leave to a Pro

A few checks are easy from the ground. Clear leaves off splash blocks and the end of any downspout extensions, and make sure extensions point away from the foundation. Watch the outlets during the next rain. If the lower section of a downspout sounds dull and solid when you tap it, there is probably a plug inside.

The upper elbow is a different story. Reaching it means working from a ladder at the roofline, often over shrubs, fences or uneven ground. Running a hose up from the bottom can also push a packed clog tighter instead of clearing it. For two story homes and anything above the first floor, it is safer to have a trained technician handle it.

What Professional Downspout Cleaning Includes

Every residential gutter cleaning from B & B Window and Gutter Cleaning includes downspout flushing. Technicians remove leaves, pine needles and roof grit from the gutters by hand, then flush each downspout and confirm water flows freely to the ground. They also look for signs of blockage or damage that could cause trouble later in the season.

Debris is bagged and hauled away or placed in your green waste bin, whichever you prefer.

Book Before Peak Season Fills Up

Late October through early December is the busiest stretch of the year for B & B, and those weeks are reserved first for annual service customers. Homeowners on a gutter cleaning maintenance plan get priority booking during peak season. The Recommended and Preferred plans also include free downspout covers, which help keep leaves from washing into the pipe in the first place.

Without a plan, schedule as early in November as you can so your downspouts are clear before the heavier December rain.
